Expungement
Expungement has different meanings in different states. Most states have a statute that provides some form of relief to a defendant who has complete their sentance. For instance, in California expungement is usually referred to as the process of clearing a criminal record of criminal convictions by asking the court reopen a case, withdraw the finding of guilt, and dismiss the case in the interest of justice. In Texas, expungement means asking the court to order the sealing of a record of an arrest that did not lead to a conviction. See the Expungement Basics page for more information.
